Day 3 -- Session 1

Unequally insecure: Racial Disparities in job insecurity in the US, 1979-2011

Elizabeth Wrigley-Field

Disparities between B-W workers are increasing:

  • across the age distrbituion
  • in the private sector
  • inside cities
  • among least educated, but also among those seekign college education
  • in professional/managerial jobs, and probably alos skilled blue-collar jobs
  • Meanwhile, they remian particularly high in technical/sales and administrative jobs
  • Patterns partially resemble the older deindustrializetion/segregationt heory, but the occupational distribution in particular suggests the ned for a new explanation for a new oera of racial stratification in the economy
