Work Experience

My father is a tax accountant.  My very first job, starting when I was about 8 years old, was working for him, doing filing and shredding.  In case you're wondering why this is relevant, it is how I learned about having a job, being a good employee, and taxes.  The rule in our household was that all unearned income (such as birthday money) had to go into our bank accounts, saving it for college.  Thus, if I wanted something, I had to work for my dad to earn the money to buy it.  My dad paid me $5 an hour (but that was an hour of productive work - if he caught me not working, he would take off those minutes!).  But he charged 20% tax, so I only actually got to keep $4 for every hour I worked (the other dollar was sent to my bank account).  As a result, I am a hard-working employee, and I understand very well the idea of earning my money.

My first job with someone else paying me was tutoring.  I have always loved helping people with school work, so I was excited to be getting paid to do it!  My junior year of high school, I tutored a girl through Honors Chemistry, and senior year, another girl through Honors Biology.  It was then that I discovered just how much I enjoy being able to teach and help people understand things.  This has driven most of my volunteer work, and has led me to consider a path in education.

I then started having summer jobs.  I spent the summers of 2008 and 2009 interning at NASA Ames Research Center in the Robotics Academy.  I spent the summer of 2010 as a counselor for Stanford's Educational Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY).  I spent the summers of 2011 and 2012 doing research under Professor Sheri Sheppard in the Mechanical Engineering department, investigating engineering education. I kept doing research throughout the school year as well.  I also started coaching little girl's gymnastics in January 2012.
