ME 203 is an introductory design class that combines elements of product design and manufacturing. In this class I designed a prototype for a free-standing bike 

hanger. The base and upright are connected by pins so the structure can be taken apart for storage. My inspiration for this project came from my struggle to store my road bike in my dorm room since space is very limited and you can't drill into the walls. 

 

The base of the structure is made of square steel tubing that was welded used a TIG welder. I spent most of the quarter learning how to weld and practicing my technique. 

 

 

The hook that the bike hangs from (shown below) was made by heating a straight steel rod until it was red-hot and then bending it around cylinders of different sizes to form the hook shape.
